Carotid Artery Ultrasound

🧠 What Does a Carotid Artery Ultrasound Detect?

Carotid artery ultrasound is performed to evaluate the carotid arteries, which are the major blood vessels that deliver oxygen-rich blood to the brain. This test helps detect plaque buildup, a key contributor to stroke risk. When plaque becomes significant, it can lead to blood clots that may travel to the brain and cause a stroke.

In addition to plaque, the ultrasound can reveal other vascular abnormalities, including:

  • Arterial dissection – a tear in the inner wall of the artery that may disrupt blood flow
  • Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) – a structural irregularity in the artery wall that can result in narrowing or aneurysms

Early detection of these conditions allows for timely intervention and stroke prevention. At CC Vascular Medicine & Imaging, we use advanced imaging technology and expert interpretation to provide accurate, same-day results.
