ABI (Ankle Brachial Index)

Early detection for peripheral artery disease (PAD)

ABI testing is a simple, non-invasive way to assess blood flow in the legs and identify signs of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)—a condition where narrowed art eries reduce circulation to the limbs. At CC Vascular Medicine, we use ABI to detect PAD early and guide timely treatment.

What to Expect

During the test, we compare blood pressure readings in your ankles and arms. A lower pressure in the legs may indicate restricted blood flow due to arterial narrowing. For more detailed insights, we may:

  • Place blood pressure cuffs at different levels of the legs to pinpoint problem areas
  • Perform the test before and after treadmill walking to evaluate how well blood flows during activity

Why It Matters

PAD can lead to leg pain, slow wound healing, and increased risk of heart attack or stroke. ABI testing helps us:

  • Diagnose PAD early—even before symptoms appear
  • Monitor disease progression or treatment effectiveness
  • Customize your care plan based on real-time vascular data

Who Should Consider ABI

This test is especially recommended for patients with:

  • Leg pain while walking (claudication)
  • Diabetes or smoking history
  • High blood pressure or cholesterol
  • Family history of vascular disease
