Breast Cancer and Vascular Health: Understanding the Risks of Lymphedema and Blood Clots

October 2025

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we at CC Vascular Medicine and Imaging want to highlight a critical but often overlooked part of breast cancer care: vascular health. Cancer and its treatments can affect the veins and lymphatic system, leading to complications such as lymphedema and blood clots .

Lymphedema

Lymphedema develops when lymphatic fluid builds up in the arm, chest, or breast, often after lymph node removal or radiation. In addition to swelling, patients may also experience pain, tightness, heaviness, and reduced range of motion, which can interfere with daily activities.

Risk factors for lymphedema include:

  • The number of lymph nodes removed
  • Radiation therapy
  • Obesity
  • A sedentary lifestyle

Prevention and Care:

  • Early detection is key—monitoring for subtle changes helps prevent worsening symptoms.
  • Maintenance strategies such as compression therapy, gentle exercise, and imaging support long-term mobility and comfort.

Blood Clots

Blood clots (thrombosis) are another serious complication. Breast cancer itself, along with chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and the use of a port for treatment delivery, can increase the risk of clot formation. Clots may occur in the legs, arms, or veins near the port, and in some cases, they can travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism.

Symptoms of a blood clot may include:

  • Pain or swelling in a limb
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath

Because blood clots can become life-threatening, any of these symptoms should be addressed immediately.

Prevention and Care:

  • Risk assessments and imaging can identify issues early.
  • Preventive care strategies reduce risks during treatment and recovery.

Our Role in Your Care

At CC Vascular Medicine and Imaging, we specialize in prevention, early detection, and maintenance care for vascular conditions. By addressing vascular health alongside cancer treatment, we help patients stay safer, more comfortable, and better supported throughout their journey.

This October, we honor the strength of survivors, patients, and families. Remember—breast cancer care is whole-body care, including vascular health.

Together, awareness and early action save lives.
